How It Works

ISO 3166-1 Standard

ISO 3166-1 is the international standard for country codes published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It defines three sets of codes:

  • Alpha-2 — Two-letter codes (e.g., US, GB, JP). Most widely used in internet domains, currency codes, and international standards.
  • Alpha-3 — Three-letter codes (e.g., USA, GBR, JPN). Used in international organizations and more readable contexts.
  • Numeric — Three-digit codes (e.g., 840, 826, 392). Language-independent, used in systems that avoid Latin scripts.
Calling Codes & Currencies

International phone calling codes are assigned by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) under the E.164 standard. Each country or territory has a unique numeric prefix dialed after the international access code (typically +).

Currency codes follow the ISO 4217 standard, where the first two letters typically match the country's alpha-2 code and the third letter is the currency initial (e.g., USD = US Dollar, GBP = Great Britain Pound).
